Illinois Hazing Overview
Skilled Legal Assistance from Our Chicago Juvenile Defense Attorney
Hazing is often a regular part of being in high school or in college. However, there have been many cases where hazing has gone too far, resulting in students suffering serious injuries or even being killed. Not only will a student face serious punishment from his or her school, but also with the law.
If your child has been charged with hazing that resulted in the significant harm or death to someone else, the Law Office of Steven Fine is prepared to do whatever it takes to get your teenager the most favorable outcome possible. With more than 20 years of experience, our defense lawyer understands how to properly protect your child’s rights and future.
Hazing Laws & Penalties
According to Illinois law, a person commits hazing when he or she commits any act that is not authorized or sanctioned by the educational institution and results in bodily harm to any person. In other words, any type of hazing that leads to someone getting hurt could result in criminal charges.
Hazing is generally a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by a maximum jail sentence of one year. If the hazing results in death or great bodily harm, however, it is considered a Class 4 felony that results in a maximum prison sentence of three years.
In addition to potential criminal penalties, an individual who is charged with hazing may face disciplinary action from their school or university, as well as a civil lawsuit.
